Medical Rehabilitation as advanced Concept in the Therapy of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and other Chronic Disorders related to Environmental Illness
Symptoms related to pollution in home and work environments are called environ-mental illness (EI). They are often followed by chronic syndromes as fatigue, pain and/or multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), which are difficult to treat medically. These patients are not only disabled in their bodily functions. Typically social and oc-cupational functions as well as many aspects of daily life are impaired. Therefore a multidimensional concept for the rehabilitation of persons with these disorders is presented. The concept for rehabilitation is based on a “bio-psycho-social” model of illness. Codes of the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health), which are significant for patients with MCS/EI are suggested. Goals of rehabilitation and therapeutic modules are introduced. This therapeutic approach is suggested to be supplementary to the measures taken in primary care.
