Zusammenfassung Health risks due to nano-materials? The nanotechnology provides fascinating prospects for science, medicine and industry. The necessary public control instruments still remain to be established to prevent dangers to environment and health. A public debate involving informed representatives of the civil society therefore is key to a sustainable future of this technology. In this paper we point out gaps of knowledge that forestall an extensive risk assessment. These range from the environmental fate of nanomaterials including their persistence in various media to their behavior in the human organism.
